Student shines at special Duke of Edinburgh event attended by HRH

Cedars Martin Sixth Form student Abigail enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase her Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) journey during a special celebration event attended by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh at The Cedars Academy on 16th September.

The exciting event brought together young people from across Leicester to celebrate the many ways DofE helps participants build confidence, develop new skills and prepare for their future. Abigail proudly represented the sixth form as part of a CV skills workshop led by professionals from leading employers, Next and Amey.

The workshop gave students the chance to explore how experiences gained through volunteering, physical activities and expeditions can help them stand out when applying for jobs, apprenticeships and university places. It was a great opportunity for Abigail to share the skills she has developed through DofE and how they complement her studies.

Adding to the excitement of the day, the event was attended by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, making it an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Abigail has already achieved her Bronze and Silver DofE Awards and is currently working towards Gold. Alongside her studies, she volunteers by teaching younger dancers, helping them develop their confidence and skills while continuing her own passion for dance through seven hours of training each week.

Reflecting on her DofE journey, Abigail said:

Before completing my expedition, I didn't know any of the other participants. By taking part, I made core memories and lasting friendships that I will always value.

Dan Thomas, Head of Cedars Martin Sixth Form, said:

We are incredibly proud of Abigail for representing the sixth form at such a special event.

She has embraced every opportunity the Duke of Edinburgh's Award has to offer and is a fantastic example of the determination, commitment and positivity we see in so many of our students.

To take part in an event attended by HRH is something she will remember for years to come.

The day also saw the sixth form’s Associate Principal, Mr Rolfe, and Executive Principal, Ms Sanchez, join education leaders, students and DofE representatives for a series of round table discussions. They explored how programmes such as DofE can help schools create even more opportunities for young people to build confidence, develop essential life skills and discover new interests beyond the classroom.

For Abigail, the event was not only a chance to celebrate her achievements so far, but also an opportunity to inspire others to get involved in DofE and make the most of the experiences on offer.

Congratulations to Abigail on representing Cedars Martin Sixth Form so brilliantly and making the most of a truly memorable day.
